When a picnic is mentioned, what is the first thing that enters your head? Is it the land and the views that are going to hit you? Is it the thought of tucking in to the fruits of your labour and eating the food? Maybe it is the notion that when you have found your spot, you are going to be rewarded with a lovely glass of wine or two? If the truth is all of these, then fair play to you. Not only will you be healthy by being outside of your house. You food is likely to be prepared by yourself at home, and be fresh and healthy.
So what wine is best for a picnic? It is to me a matter of taste, and also whether it is possible to keep the wine sufficiently chilled. If you haven’t anything to hand, go for a light red like a Fitou, or a classic Chianti. A strong cheese is always a good accompanyment with one of these. My wife is Spanish, so we are never short of some tasty Manchego, which is similar to strong Cheddar. With a good bottle of wine, should be some decent wine glasses. Is it a good idea to be taking glassware along with you to use on the picnic? It is heavy and vulnerable, and often gets damaged. I often take some plastic glasses with me, which are cheap to buy and strong. There is often a slight loss of taste which is the trade off. What appeals to me is the different shapes for different types of wine. A red wine glass is often large and open, allowing the free movement of fragrance and taste. A white wine glass typically is smaller, to cater for more subtle forms of flavour.
Whatever you choose, just make sure that you find somewhere where you can relax and forget the pressures of your everyday lifestyle.
